NICO FELT like crap. He hadn’t meant to dredge up bad memories or upset Skye, but the deal with the ex-neighbor was something they had to explore. And either Skye was an amazing actress, or her reaction to learning she’d been set up by more than just Martin was another piece of evidence that she was only a victim like Nico.

A victim.

Damn it, he hated to think of himself that way. He felt like a fool, but he didn’t believe in coloring the truth to make it look more appealing.

He wrapped Skye in his arms and held her as traffic crept past them. People in other cars, probably bored as hell by the monotonous desert landscape and the lack of anything better to do, stared at them as they passed. Nico turned Skye so that she wouldn’t have to see them staring.

“I’m okay,” she finally said, and he felt her stiffen against his chest.

He let go, found a bottle of water in the trunk for her to rinse her mouth with, and once she was done, they got back into the car. When Nico signaled to merge into the right lane, a semi truck left space for them to enter.

“You feel like talking a little more about…what happened?”

“Yeah, it’s okay. I normally don’t lose my lunch over stuff like this. I just…I don’t know.”

“Don’t worry, I know it’s my driving,” he said, letting her off the hook. Whether he could trust her or not, he couldn’t stand to see her get so upset again.

She laughed. “I’ll be fine, I promise.”

“What was this neighbor’s full name?”

“Susan Tanner. But if she was involved with Martin, who knows if it’s her real name?”

“Did she mention where she was moving to when she left your building?”

“She said she was moving closer to her family in Oklahoma so she could help take care of her sick mother.”

Nico recalled the red lace bra he’d found in Martin’s stuff. “Any chance she’s a triple-D cup?”

He cast a glance at Skye and caught her puzzled expression. “She was definitely well-endowed, but she wasn’t that big. I guess she could have gotten implants though.”

“Maybe she did that after she moved away.”

“But if she left town, then why would her bra show up in Martin’s stuff?”

Nico shrugged, adjusting his hands on the black-leather steering wheel. “You got me.”

He wasn’t sure how much more of this traffic jam he could take. He folded the map out on the steering wheel and studied it. They were still at least seventy-five miles from the Nevada border. There was a little town coming up that probably had a few restaurants and gas stations—and would probably be overrun with people like them who wanted to wait out the traffic.

“Maybe she didn’t leave town—maybe she just got away from me, but stuck around L.A. so she could be close to Martin.”

“It’s possible. The question remains—where is she now?”

“She could have gone on ahead of Martin to set up a place for him to live, or maybe stake out his next victim, if that’s her usual job.
